Workplace Learning Systems

When people enter new jobs in critical work groups, it is in the company’s interest to get them up the learning curve to mastery performance as quickly as possible.

An employee has learning opportunities from many different sources. These include the company’s training department, academic institutions, learning by doing, learning from peers on the job, self-reading, and self-education. The problem with this is often confusion, lack of support for learning from the boss, and an unorganized learning program. This results in a learning curve that is much longer than needed with the consequences of substandard performance while the new employee is working up the curve toward mastery.

The Workplace Learning System is a way to organize learning in the work group in order to systematically take advantage of all the available sources of learning and bring new employees up the learning curve at the maximum practical rate. The following are some of the key features of a Workplace Learning System:

  • Local management sets the goals, assigns the resources, supports the learning process, and holds the participants accountable.

  • Learners have a job Performance Model that spells out their responsibilities, tasks, work products, standards of performance, and the required skills and knowledge to perform.

  • Learners have an individualized learning plan that gets them to mastery performance in a specified time, with specified learning activities to get them there by taking advantage of company, academic, on-the-job, e-learning, coaching, and other opportunities.

  • Learners have a personal job coach—someone who knows the job and can guide them through the learning process efficiently.

  • The management of the Workplace Learning System is shared by the local managers, a workplace learning council made up of members of the workforce, and at the beginning, at least, by a performance consultant.

  • Management receives regular measured learning results.

We offer a systematic process for installing Workplace Learning Systems. Our preferred method is to work with your internal performance consultants so that they can install Workplace Learning Systems wherever needed in your company. We are also willing and able to play the performance consulting role and perform the installation work for you.
